Its full name is Cryptocoryne crispatula var balansae. Unlike Crypt Spiralis, \u003cem\u003eCrypt Balansae\u003c\/em\u003e is a little more sensitive. Like most Crypts, it might melt back in your tank when you first recieve it.(It hasn't melted in my 220 yet but that doesn't mean it can't happen) Make sure you plant your C. Balansae in a good substrate with plenty of nutrients available.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt has been my experience that \u003cem\u003eCrypt Balansae\u003c\/em\u003e is a heavy root feeder, so make sure you at least have some root tabs. It's ruffled, taller leaves give it a nice contrast in your planted aquarium My buddy Bryan demanded that I start stocking this plant, I told him I would under the condition that he wrote the write up, but I had to get it up here... It can be a center piece plant in a small aquarium or as a filler plant for larger tanks. From beginner to expert, crypt balansae is an outstanding addition to your aquarium. If you are searching for a way to have the look of a ruffle onion but don’t have the room in a small tank, Crypt. Balansae is the way to go. \u003cem\u003eCrypt Balansae’s\u003c\/em\u003e leaves are narrow. In my tank I have never had a leaf wider than ¾ of an inch. The leaves reach up to 8 or 9 inches and have a wrinkled appearance that add awesome contrast to smoother plants in the tank.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a dirted tank the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eCryptocoryne balansae\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e will take off within a couple months. Generally a slower grower than the more common bronze or green crypts, this plant is worth having in your tank. Whether in gravel, dirted, or just sand, Cryptocoryne balansae will grow. The better the substrate though, the faster the growth. All around this is a killer plant for every level of aquatic enthusiasts. Cryptocoryne balansae in time can spread and produce an amazing mat of dense vegetation. Generally used in the middleground of a tank it adds depth and a splash of something different to every tank. CRYPTS MELT. The leaves on the Crypt Wendtii might fall off not long after you plant them. THIS IS COMPLETELY NORMAL WITH CRYPTOCORYNE. It just happens.\u003c\/span\u003e \u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"\u003eWhat you are going to want to look for is a tiny bit of new growth coming back up out of the center of the plants after a few days. These are the leaves you are looking for. They are the leaves that are more prepared for your tank. They are the leaves that are going to last longer.\u003c\/span\u003e \u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e \u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"\u003eCrypts are considered a low light plant and like a little shade. These \u003cstrong\u003eC. Wendtii\u003c\/strong\u003e will grow shorter and more compact under high light. Under less light they will grow a little longer and taller.\u003c\/span\u003e \u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"\u003eI wouldn't add these plants to a tank that isn't already established with plants. I dirted or well fertilized tank would be ideal. If you want some lush green. Crypt Spiralis has thicker leaves and grows taller. It also has a tendency to shoot off runners all over other parts of your tank. \u003cem\u003eCrypt Spiralis\u003c\/em\u003e makes a great background plant. The thing that shocks me about Crypt Spiralis is how when we got it in, it didn't melt like most crypts. NOTE: That doesn't mean it won't melt in your tank, but it will grow back. If you have never kept a Crypt before, you should start with Crypt Spiralis....great hardy Crypt! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003eCare Scale of 1-10:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e1.5  The .5 is only because it might melt back if what we are selling has not fully converted to underwater growth... This is what I did when I first this plant for my 220. I took a small portion of two leaves and tied the rhizome several times over and over again to a rock. I don't recall how long it actually took the Windelov Java Fern to really take off, but I can tell you that once it got adjusted and a good grasp on the rock--- It went nuts. I first fell in love with Jungle Val when I put it in my high tech tank. (high lights\/ dirt and CO2) It grew to the point where it was out of control.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere were so many runners popping up that I had a hard time removing it when I wanted it out of my tank. Jungle val also does great in a beginners tank without dirt. I have seen it in low light tanks with hardly any sort of nutrients in the substrate. (If you want to have a great substrate, check out our dirt substrate kits) I have seen Jungle val grow in just plain sand even. Jungle Val might wither away when you put it into your tank. The leaves grow so easy that it isn't a problem and will come back stronger. The better the substrate the better the Red Tiger Lotus will grow. The Red Tiger Lotus is from west Africa and just looks great as a contrast in you planted aquarium tank. I was right. The RED on this Hygrophila cordata is a real winner for me. It enjoys moderate lighting and provides a gorgeous reddish tint to it's beautiful elongated leaves. The red stem helps aid this visual effect. I would say it likes its PH around 6.8 to 7.5.  (We have found it doesn't care for harder water than 7.5....)    Don't over think that- this plant doesn't care!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese plants have beautiful white roots and are completely submerged plants. I would rate it a 3 out of 10 in terms of difficulty as it does prefer a moderate light.   \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe more light you give them, the more RED they will give you.  We have grown them in near full sun to get that red stem really popping off and coming out into the leaves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnder lower light it will be more lighter green.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have some fun growing this above water as well.
